Dr. Adrian Venter, Director of Naval Hill Planetarium, died from a single blunt-force blow to the head, struck with the bronze Founders' Armillary Sphere Award from his own office shelf. Following a full review of forensic, financial, and access-control evidence, Werner Botha, Head of Maintenance & Technical Operations, has been identified as the sole suspect with means, motive, and opportunity, and has been referred for prosecution. The other three persons of interest have been cleared of the murder, though two admitted separately to unrelated conduct addressed below.
Botha had worked at Naval Hill Planetarium for twenty years and expected to be promoted into a deputy director role. For three years, he had quietly padded equipment invoices through NovaTech AV Solutions — a company connected to his brother-in-law, Pieter Botha — pocketing the inflated difference, roughly R380,000 in total. On the night of Thursday, 8 May 2025, once the public show ended at 21:30, Dr. Venter went to the Dome Control Room to archive the night's show render and finish his board presentation. Botha, whose closing duties were meant to keep him in the Server Room, instead slipped back in through the private connecting door between Adrian's Office and the Dome Control Room at 21:52 to make one last appeal to keep his position. Venter told him the decision was final — both the money and the job.
In a sudden, unplanned burst of rage, Botha struck him once from behind with the trophy, killing him within minutes. Venter never saw the blow coming and showed no defensive wounds.
Botha wiped his fingerprints from the trophy, turned the body face-up and slumped it against the console to suggest an accidental fall, left the trophy nearby, and was gone before the estimated time-of-death window closed at 22:15. Had a genuine motive (fabricated data in a grant-funded paper) and lied about her movements. The electronic access log places her inside Dr. Venter's office from 21:27 to 21:45 — she has admitted separately to deleting a flagged data file from his computer during that window — after which the security keycard access log confirms she was crossing back toward the archive wing by 21:58. She was already clear of the office five minutes before the estimated time-of-death window even opened, and was in the archive wing — nowhere near the Control Room — for its entire duration.
Had a genuine motive (a draft proposal to cut her division's funding by 60%) and was not forthcoming about her movements. The security keycard access log places her leaving the meet-and-greet at 21:53 and returning at 21:59 — six minutes used to retrieve her own printed impact statistics from the Archive/Storage Room. Her confirmed return within six minutes places her too far from the Control Room to have committed the murder and staged the scene.
Had a genuine motive (a R2,000,000 life insurance policy dated 8 April 2025, naming her sole beneficiary) and was not forthcoming about a personal habit — a timestamped gift shop receipt, bearing her own signature, shows she let herself back into the gift shop she had already cashed up and locked for the night, to buy cigarettes at 21:47, a habit she kept hidden from Dr. Venter. The security keycard access log confirms she had rejoined the foyer crowd by 21:56, placing her in the wing farthest from the Control Room for the entire time-of-death window.
